La idea se la deben a Ferdinand Sorensen, de Nebraska. Él vino de un viaje a Dinamarca con el propósito firme y comenzó por convertir su casa al estilo danés y la bautizó Møllebakken.
La iniciativa de convertirse en una pequeña isla danesa en medio de América del Norte terminó haciendo de Solvang un atractivo más que curioso para el turismo. No tardaron en proliferar restaurantes, cervecerías y panaderías que convidan la gastronomía del país europeo.
Algo que llama la atención de todos los visitantes es una réplica de un carruaje del siglo XIX conocido como Hønen en el que se puede montar para hacer tours por las callecitas de Solvang.
