Nueva Zelanda es un país pequeño y sorprendente. Algunos de sus paisajes increíbles que hemos visitado incluyen las chimeneas de agua, o los lagos que hierven. Hoy es el turno de los fiordos de la costa suroeste de la la Isla Sur, que sorprenden a miles de visitantes cada año.
Milford Sound es uno de los sitios turísticos más famosos de Nueva Zelanda. El mar, se interna tierra dentro en un área al suroeste de la Isla Sur, y lo hace en un paisaje de costas escarpadas, con rocas y abismos que se elevan en forma abrupta hasta alcanzar 1200 metros de altura, e infinidad de cascadas que caen directo al mar.
Situado dentro del Fiordland National Park, los fiordos de Milford Sound toman formas sorprendentes. Pero sin dudas, lo más llamativo de la zona es la atmósfera que genera el paisaje montañoso en aguas profundas, la costa recortada y esfumada entre las nubes y la niebla, con sus reflejos imponentes en el agua, y por sobre todo, la naturaleza exuberante en las laderas y caídas de agua que ensordecen, cayendo directamente al mar desde cientos de metros de altura.
Milford Sound es una de las zonas más húmedas del mundo, las lluvias, pueden alcanzar los 7.000 milímetros de acumulación al año, lo cual es impresionante y visible en los cientos de cascadas que suelen caer desde alturas que superan los 1.000 metros.
La mayoría de las excursiones a Milford Sound se realizan embarcado partiendo desde el Centro de visitantes de Milford Sound. con una duración de unas dos horas promedio. Considerando que el área es aislada y muy poco accesible, no existen poblados cercanos.
Durante el recorrido en barco, avanzaremos por el espejo de agua entre paredes de roca imponentes, en muchas partes cubiertas por bosques húmedos que parecen desafiar la gravedad. No sería extraño realizar el trayecto acompañado por delfines y focas muy comunes en el área.
Otro modo de conocer el Parque es recorriendo los senderos demarcados a través del sendero Milford track, una travesía para aventureros con ansias de descubrir paisajes únicos desde tierra. Una opción también muy utilizada, es practicando canotaje. De cualquier modo la experiencia de recorrer Milford Sound resultará increíble.
