Cuevas que brillan en la oscuridad // Glow in the dark caves

En Waikato, Nueva Zelanda, hay una atracción indispensabe: se trata de las cuevas Waitomo.
Dentro de Waitomo, en las paredes y techos de roca, viven miles de gusanos que brillan por sí mismos, el nombre preciso de estas criaturas luminosas es "arachnocampa luminosa".
Se cree que la edad de las cuevas en Waitomo es de billones de años y ya a principios de siglo XX eran utilizadas como atractivos para el turismo.
Dentro de esta asombrosa cueva, se puede deambular por 250 metros de pasillos en lo profundo de la tierra hasta desembocar en “la catedral”, cuya acústica es asombrosa. Allí, tomar el paseo en bote por el lago que se extiende bajo el techo abovedado. Sin dudas, es la mejor manera de apreciar este fenómeno tan original. Además de la Cueva de los gusanos brillantes, también se pueden visitar la Ruakuri, la Aranui y la Gardner.
La cueva Waitomo era conocida por todos los locales desde siempre pero recién cuando fue explorada por Tane Tinorau, un jefe maorí, en el año 1887, se descubrieron las demás cavernas subterráneas. La primera en encontrar fue la Glowworm Grotto.
 Desde 1906 la Cueva estuvo en manos del gobierno, y fue restaurada a sus descendientes originales en 1989.
